Moose Stomps Iditaord Lead Dog and Jumps Into Sled

The Anchorage Daily News reports a moose on the Denali Highway stomped to death the lead dog of an Iditarod musher. Ramey Smyth’s as he zipped the dog into his sled basket with the early evening fading into a 50 degree-below-zero night.
“I told him I loved him and not to forget me,” Smyth said. Mushers have reported numerous such encounters with moose in Alaska. The moose, Smyth said, “came down on him with both front feet, and then it just started with the rest of the team.” As the dogs rolled on, the moose came racing up the gangline, hooves flying, until it got to the sled. Smyth grabbed the only thing he had to defend himself — the ice hook used to anchor the team. “I smacked him with the ice hook,” Smyth said. And then the attack was over. Smyth watched the moose depart.

Confrontrations Between Hikers and Hunters Over $165 Dog Tracking Collars

The Asheville Citizen-Times reports that some hikers are removing $165 tracking collars from hunters dogs. The hikers think the collars are shock collars aimed at hurting the dogs. North Carolina law say on public lands it is illegal to interfere with hunters killing game legally. It is also illegal to “take or abuse property, equipment or hunting dogs that are being used for the lawful taking of wildlife resources,” according to state law. They note that by taking away the collars many of the dogs are lost or stolen.

Mule vs. Mountain Lion

Horse vs. Mountain Lion These pics came from somebody in a hunting party in Arizona. Yes, the horse killed the Mountain Lion! The Cougar had been stalking them for the better part of the morning, on the way out to a hunt. They were pretty sure it was after a dog. The Cat apparently ambushed them, and the horse pictured tossed its rider and went into attack (defense) mode, the horses scattered and shots were fired but no one was sure if they hit the Cat or not. Unfortunately, the battle was decently long, and it wasn’t until it was almost over that one of the guys started snapping pics. It’s in the americasroof gallery.

Snopes is investigating whether these photos are an urban legend.

Follow Up November 1, 2005
Western Mule Magazine has tracked down the story of Jody Anglin’s mule Berry in southwest New Mexico. The lion was dead and Berry started hitting it. The photographs got on the Internet by giving the pictures to his grandpa and his grandpa gave them to Jody’s aunt and that aunt gave them to a friend and that friend sent them e-mail to a friend
and it went from there to what it is today.
