Authorities Balk at Homeland Security Designation at Elbert Pumped Storage Facility

The Chieftan reports county officials near Mount Elbert are upset over national security designation of the dam at the Twin Lakes pumped storage electric station just south of Colorado’s highest point.

Lake County Commissioner said:

“At the Mount Elbert Forebay, you can’t even walk across the dam because of Homeland Security. It does nothing but turn tourists away.”

The commissioners are balking at choosing any of the alternatives listed in a Sept. 16 report, saying they only want to focus on three issues: the condition of county fisheries, the effect of higher water levels on Turquoise Lake recreation and the potential for development like marinas and campgrounds at both areas.
