The deadline for thousands of dollars in prizes for essays in the Backpacker Magazine’s Highpoints Challenge occurred July 1.
According to the rules:
The High Points Challenge Goal is satisfied by recording the participant’s/entrant’s performance of the following outdoor activities in the Backpacker Hiker’s Log, all within the 12-month contest period: hiking a total of 365 trail miles, climbing a total elevation of 52,000 feet, and camping outdoors a total of 26 nights; and, in addition, earn 600 points through ascending each state’s highest elevation point detailed within the Backpacker.com High Points editorial and valued within the Backpacker Hiker’s Log. The editors of Backpacker magazine will select semi-finalists from among all registered eligible entries received who, in the opinion of the editors,’ have completed the High Points Challenge Goal or demonstrated effort in completing the High Points Challenge Goal. Upon notification, the semi-finalists will be required to submit a written essay explaining, in twelve (12) words or less, how participation in the High Points Challenge has changed his/her life.
