The AP reports the Southernmost Marine Buoy Southernmost Marker at Key West was overhauled and rededicated as part of a sprucing up of the point.
The marker is 12 feet tall and 7 feet wide and was installed in 1983. There are new traffic controls, historical plaques and a park atmosphere. The dedication coincided with the Conch Republic Independence Celebration. Continuing through today, the event commemorates Key West’s 1982 “secession” after a temporary U.S. Border Patrol roadblock at the top of the Keys Overseas Highway.
