The AP reports one of the earliest ozone warnings in history has been issue for the higher elevations for the Smokies — just in time for President Bush’s Earth Day visit on Friday to Cades Cove. Ozone season is traditionally May to September. This is not the earliest Ozone warning date.
Under federal and state standards in Tennessee and North Carolina, an eight-hour average ozone concentration of 85 parts per billion or greater is unhealthy. Natural ozone levels are estimated to be 20-40 parts per billion.
