08/08/2001 Ink Wells North Approach to Gannett Closed A fire on both sides of the Glacier Trail on the north Ink Wells approach to Gannett has closed this approach. The fire has so far consumed about 550 acres. Officials believe it will probably stay totally within the Fitzpatrick Wilderness and are not actively fighting it even though they think it could spread to 4,000 acres. They do not expect containment before September. Meanwhile the fire by the east entrance to Yellowstone has subsided enough that they have started to reopen the entrance.
08/08/2001 Woman Mugged in Denali National Park A woman was beaten to unconciousness in a Denali National Park. Park officials cannot remember of there ever being any other muggings but think this may be a sign of things to come as the park becomes more popular and has more seasonal employees.

08/06/2001 Are First Ascents Worth It in Kyrgyzstan? Climbing Magazine paints an unflattering portrait of Western climbers who are seeking "first ever" ascent titles in Kyrgystan. Last years a group of American climbers were kidnapped and then escaped after pushing their captor off a cliff. However, this is a very poor and explosive region and the climbing attempts are stirring all sorts of often fatal events.

08/03/2001 Charles Mound Illinois Closed to "Tourists" The highpoint of Illinois has been closed to tourists although "legitimate" highpointers can make arrangements to visit. The highpoint was in the front yard of a family and they say they are suffering vandalism.

08/03/2001 Into Thick Air -- National Geographic Parody of Mount Sunflower and Panorama Point The "Into Thick Air" parody of National Geographic (it even looks like the magazine!) has expanded to also include a report not only of Mount Sunflower in Kansas but also Panorama Point in Nebraska (note: they were also unsuccessful in finding Sandy Irvine).
08/02/2001 Fatality on Wildday.com K2 Expedition The owner of the clothing company wildday.com was hoping to set a record by running his business from the highest spot ever -- from his notebook computer on K2. The expedition has had a fatality and the report is rather cold as it begins, "We had our first death today. A young French climber and friend of ours went to his bed in Broad Peak Base Camp with a headache and died in his sleep of cerebral oedema. He was twenty years old.
08/02/2001 Virginia Creeper Trail Closed Following Flooding Floods throughout the Appalachians have caused havoc and fatalities. A portion of the Virginia Creeper Trail near Mount Rogers is closed indefinitely after a trestle was washed out.
08/01/2001 Abandon All Friends and Relatives on Rainier The Rainier guides are serious about avoiding distractions. They are separating couples and friends on the ascents.
08/01/2001 Climbing State Highpoints in the Winter Dave Johnston of Talkeetna (part of the "Minus 148" party) is attempting winter ascents of all state highpoints. He's done the difficult ones and only has the likes of Florida and Delaware to go.

The cabinet level Commissioner of Parks attended. 89-year-old Paul Zumwalt won a lifetime achievement award. John Mitchler and Dave Covill won a Club Service Vin Hoeman award.
07/25/2001 1001 Hikes Up Mount LeConte Mount LeConte in the Smokies is the highest peak from base to summit in the East. Ed Wright has climbed it more than a thousand times.
07/25/2001 A Thousand Swarm Earthquakes Rattle Whitney The area just south of Whitney is experiencing "swarm" earthquakes. The biggest quake was a 4.9. There has been little or no damage and nobody has been injured. Geologists do not believe this is a portent of "the big one" -- although the third most powerful quake in the contiguous U.S. was at Lone Pine in 1872.

07/25/2001 Cuba's Highpoint Reopens Cuba has reopened Pico Turquino to the public although you will probably need a local guide. This was afterall where Fidel Castro hid out during the revolution and has been one of the most "secretative" highpoints anywhere.

The Tanana Chiefs have renewed their fight to rename Mount McKinley for its Athabaskan name of Denali. Further Mount Foraker would be renamed to Denali Be'ot, meaning "Denali's Wife." The Alaska Legislature supported this for 25 years however the move has been blocked by Rep. Ralph Regula of McKinley's home district in Ohio who has always introduced Congressional legislation to block this. You can also vote on our poll.

07/18/2001 Double Amputee Begins Everest Ascent on Aug. 9 Ed Hommer, a double amputee from Duluth, Minnesota. Hommer would be the first double amputee to summit the more than 29,000-foot Mount Everest when American-Canadian Mount Everest Expedition begins its ascent on Aug. 9. In 1999, Hommer became the first double amputee to summit Mount McKinley. This is the same mountain where, in 1981, Hommer crashed his single-engine airplane and was stranded for several days with little food and no shelter. After being rescued, Ed's frostbitten legs were amputated at mid-calf.
