I am so sorry to hear about the vandalism at Mt. Sunshine. I enjoyed my trip to visit the high point of Kansas only about 6 years ago or so. This trip included a road tour of some 7 states, 4 high points were visited and I really got a feel for what this part of the country looked like.

If that funds gets set up I will contribute.

If the department of Interior is done away with what happens to all the federally recognized tribes in the country and will the treatys be honored and respected, or is this the last shot land grab because of natural resources etc.... Our treatys were never taken seriously we in Indian country get about as much mainstream media as Ron Paul when it comes to issues. We need to know it seems if this happens the indian will have to pay with what is left. for the second time since columbus has landed the lesser of the to evils again, well if we get Mr. Paul in office we keep the constitution and we can be in court again as always fighting for every thing we have. If not then its the new world order america feels like we do now and dont like it. (This is what it feels like to be native american your government doesent care) It was all good when there was work an cash the general population had no empathy for natives im not sure they do now either iam also sure they dont like the treatment, maybe its karma for all those years of repression in americas third world miss managment and thievery Cobell, Wolfchild. well let us know here in indian country so we can pick between the two evils welcome to the way we are treated as native americans.

I was just there about a month ago late at night and while it was dark and cold I managed to find it. It was about my 10th High Point and I am sorry that someone has nothing better to do with their life than to ruin something that was in essence a piece of art work to commemorate a state's high point. Kudos for attempting to keep it open!

I just visited Mt. Sunflower for my twelfth state highpoint. I stated for about 3 hours to soak in the landscape. While standing in a field next to the highpoint and admiring the brown foliage of the past summer, a car approached from the east. It came to a stop and a lady rolled down the window to inform me that the highpoint had been vandalized. I learned that this lady was one of the Harolds', and she had no intent on closing the highpoint due to the vandalism. In this day and age it seems that closure would be a likely response following such a cowardly act. But, I applaud the decision to keep Mt. Sunflower open despite the actions that occurred on one night. I do agree with the gentleman who suggested donating some funds to the family, because yes indeed they are fixing it themselves. I learned that the commemorative stone was in nearby Oakley, KS being fixed and will be returned. I was bummed that vandals robbed me of the opportunity to learn more about the original homesteaders and would gladly contribute to any effort to raise funds. As someone who indulges in the uniqueness of highpointing, I feel that this would be a way to give back. thank you.

It sounds like the owner is making the repairs himself. However, if there is any significant cost for the repairs, the Highpointers Club should consider creating a special fund to help out. I'm sure many members would be willing to pitch in to help ensure the highpoint remains open to the public. We might even offer to put up better security barriers such as boulders to prevent future damage from cars/trucks.

You can imagine that with all the volcanoes in the Pacific Northwest, this phenomenon is actually somewhat common, but never boring! I don't know if there's a name for this, but I call them inverted shadows. <a href="http://fototime.com/ftweb/bin/ft.dll/detailfs?userid={457BA708-7A3B-4932-9F9C-83B9D927F805}&AlbumId={C6EDF6C9-5342-44A7-BA8F-2FDF781EF869}&GroupId={54440A6D-ED06-4CC5-8CC8-1FB795988BA0}&vs=o&ndx=7&albumid={C6EDF6C9-5342-44A7-BA8F-2FDF781EF869}&groupid={54440A6D-ED06-4CC5-8CC8-1FB795988BA0}" rel="nofollow">Here's another example -- this one is my photo of a Mt.
This is innaccurate. The Sheep do not eat the mamane trees and in fact have not been the reason the palila have declined at all. There is a mamane blush every year that support the mamane, meaning, provide seed for the Palila.

The argument is that the sheep eat the young mamane shoots and thus will prevent mamane to germinate/grow in the future. This is a relevant argument, and is also one that can be accomodated without slaughtering sheep. The Palila have fluctuated between 1300 and 6000 birds for 30 years in cycles, without any impact from the sheep, so this argument is getting to be a tired, expensive, and irrelevent argument at the expense of sportsmen and sportsmen dollars that could be utilized to help manage the area for the Palila with everyone having a stake in the success of the Palila. Right now, the environmentalists have alienated the sportsman and soon their dollars will run out. The millions of allocated slush fund dollars are drying up and the whining of the environmentalist are likely to have little effect on sportsmen, who would willingly work with the environmentalist save for their exclusionist land use demands.

Bull. I would like to see the detailed breakdown on that. They are obviously averaging out a few high cost rescues among the total number of climbers, not to mention things like retirement funds and HAZMAT and sexual harrassment training and Washington DC junkets for District Rangers, not to mention NPS funds being illicitly diverted into overall Federal budget programs like international wars of aggression and corporate welfare bailouts. How about having National Park Concessionaires pay more than the pittance they do to run Congressionally-mandated business monopolies in the Parks? If there is truly a problem with the cost of climbing groups, what would be more appropriate would be a rescue insurance program that all are required to buy, as well as increased screening of qualifications, conditioning, and equipment of climbers. For example, Alpine Club membership in civilized democracies such as Germany automatically includes rescue insurance, and at a very nominal cost. And yes, I am American, and yes, I have climbed McKinley.

Ms. Warcup's partly correct--nothing in the names we give to a place can add or detract from it's intrinsic worth. Where the name of a peak or valley is significant is in what it says about us, "We the People" and the things we value. Setting aside John Denver's relative sociocultural importance, does anyone who proposes to rename this summit know anything about Richard Sopris and why Coloradans would choose to honor him? For one, he was part of an 1862 force that raced south from Denver to battle Texans near Santa Fe and prevent a Southern takeover of New Mexico and Colorado territories. It is an exaggeration to say that without Sopris and co. a Confederate flag might be flying over the Roaring Fork Valley? Perhaps, but no more of a stretch than holding that the area's most prominent feature should be given an entertainer's stage name. If happy feelings are the standard, then why not name it after my dog? He (usually) makes me happy.
