The Nor’easter on dropped a record 25 inches of snow on Mount Mansfield on October 15-16 (7 on the 15th and 18 on the 16th) which was more snow than had fallen on the peak this early before.

Vermont has requested that the Bicknell’s thrush be listed as an endangered species. The thrush is found at higher elevations of Mount Mansfield and other northeast peaks. The state notes that global warming is destroying its balsam fir habitat. There are 95,000 to 126,000 of the birds but their numbers are dramatically decreasing.

Benjamin Wetherby, caretaker for lodges in Vermont’s Green Mountain National Forest on Mount Mansfield, plans to hike the 25-mile Adirondack Great Range loop with his Australian cattle dog, Jadis, and friend, Michael DelSignore on Septmeber 11. The Great Range loop traverses eight of the Adirondacks’ 46 high peaks, including Mount Marcy, Haystack, Basin, Saddleback, Gothics, Armstrong, and Upper and Lower Wolfjaw. They are doing it to benefit National Breast Cancer Coalition and the Friederich’s Ataxia Research Alliance.

The 3rd annual Race to the Top of Vermont will be August 29, 2010 with a 9:00 start. Run, mountain bike, or non-competitively hike up the highest mountain in Vermont on the famous Mt Mansfield Toll Road. This event will be limited to the first 900 registered racers.

Proceeds from this event will benefit three 501©3 non-profit organizations. The Catamount Trail Association maintains, manages and protects the 300-mile backcountry ski trail the length of Vermont. Mobius Mentoring Movement is dedicated to growing the culture of mentoring in our communities. Girls Move Mountains mission is to nurture girls’ innate capacity for confidence, courage, and leadership through adventure-based experiential education.

The Burlington Post has an article on the Green Mountain Club’s 100th anniversary of the 273-mile Long Trail that runs up Vermont’s tree-covered spine from North Adams, Mass., to the Journey’s End marker at the Quebec border. It is the nation’s oldest long-distance trail. It features lots of photos from Mount Mansfield including a panorama.
