Mudslide closes 178 Near Sassafras Mountain

A report indicates that a section of Highway 178 near Sassafras Mountain that “goes to the mountain area” is closed indefinitely because a mudslide washed out a 40 foo section of pipe.

The exact location of the closure was not stated.

Clingmans Dome Road Closed Until June 21

The Clingmans Dome Road (which was scheduled to re-open in May and June 19) will not open until June 19 while work continues on it. The roadwork is a result of $80 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Stimulus) funds allocated to the Smokies.

Georgia Reopens Georgia Route 348 Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway (scenic route to Brasstown Bald)

Georgia has reopened the scenic route to Brasstown Bald. The route was temporarily closed in March
It is one of the highest roads in the state which hits 3,800 feet at Hogpen Gap. It did not directly affect access to Brasstown Bald but was one of the scenic approaches from the south.
