Sassafras Mountain Not Accessible from North on 178 Due to Road Collapse

Sassafras Mountain is not accessible from the north on Route 178 from North Carolina because of a road collapse between the North Carolina line and Laurel Mountain Road (north of the Sassafras turnoff). You can still access the mountain from the south on 178.

Closed Section of Blue Ridge Parkway from Asheville to Mount Mitchell is Tourist Attrraction for Hikers


The crack which closed the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 376 which has closed the Parkway from Asheville to Mount Mitchell has grown to 300 feet long, more than 6 inches wide and several feet deep. A companion crack on the side of the road has also developed.

Visitors have started hiking in from Mile Post 376 to see the crack. There is no date set for repairs. Mount Mitchell is still accessible from the north on the Parkway.
