The Assault on Mount Mitchell Bicycle Race is held traditionally the third week in May. In 2005 it is on May 20. It is sponsored by The Freewheelers of Spartenberg, SC.
The Black Mountain Marathon up Mount Mitchell for 2005 will be February 26. The race begins at dawn in Black Mountain and follows trails to 6,684′ summit of Mount Mitchell then return to the start/finish area! With a starting altitude of 2,360′, the elevation gain for this 40-mile run will be 4,324′ – in the first 20 miles!
Various sources report the Brasstown Leg of the Tour De Georgia was named the best day race by VeloNews Magazine. Lance Armstrong competed in 2004 but will not compete in 2005. The race is April 19-24. The 115 mile Brasstown leg will be April 23. Bikers on this leg have been clocked at 65 mph at Hog Pin Gap. Official Tour De Georgia web site.
