The Ashville Citizen has an amusing tale of Karen Russell, a tourist from Westerville, Ohio, on her chance encounter with President Obama which we reported earlier as he was hiking off the Blue Ride Parkway. She thought he was headed for Mount Mitchell. She said she first encountered Secret Service all in black who scanned her with a black metal detecting wand and went through he her pockets and checked out her camera.

We may have to sign President Obama up to the Highpointers Club. Last week he was reported doing perhaps stealth visit to the DC Highpoint. This week in honor of Earth Day, he went hiking at Mile Post 375.6 on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Asheville on the Mountains-to-Sea Trail headed towards Craven Gap. He is the first sitting President to visit the Parkway. Mount Mitchell is Milepost 355.4. The Mountains to Sea Trail begins on Clingmans Dome and ends at Jockey’s Ridge State Park on the Outer Banks. Parkway Chief Ranger Steve Stinnett gave him a Parkway Ball game. We may have to give Highpointing gear from the Merc. For those of you looking for dining tips, they ate at the Twelve Bones Smokehouse in Asheville.
