20th Anniversary of Summit Stewards in Adirondacks

A report on earth day in the Adirondacks has this item:

Since 1990, summit stewards have worked the Adirondack High Peaks, educating visitors about the rare alpine ecosystem that is found on only 16 of the highest peaks in the state. During the peak hiking season, summit stewards provide full time coverage on Mount Marcy and Algonquin, the highest peaks in the state. Summit stewards spend time talking to hikers on other Adirondack High Peak summits such as Mount Colden and Wright Peak.

First Recorded Ascent of Mount Marcy in 1837

In trying to find something on Mount Marcy horse I ran across this photo. The caption says

Horse standing on peak of Mount Marcy in the Adirondack Mountains. The horse was used to bring up radio equipment used in the special transmission related to the 100th anniversary of the first recorded assent of Mount Marcy.

The photo was taken Aug. 5 1937.

Will Mount Marcy Pedigree Help 50:1 Shot in Kentucky Derby

In handicapping the Kentucky Derby Homeboykris is a 50:1 shot. Homeboykris pedigree were champions in the early 20th century includes the horse Mount Marcy.

Homeboykris finished 16th This lesson to be learned is that if you want horse racing advice you might go to a different site.

Black Fly Affair in the Adirondacks

Are the famed black flies in May in the Adirondacks bothering you and making summiting Marcy impossible. What are you going to do? Why of course go dancing. The Adirondack Mountain Club is sponsoring the Black Fly Affair (Black tie optional; Hiking Boots Mandatory) at the Fort William Henry Hotel White Lion Ballroom, overlooking Lake George on May 21.

Mt. Hood snowpack 122 percent of average

More than three times the amount of snow has fallen this year atop Mount Hood than last year, reaping benefits for Oregon ski areas, resorts and snow tire installers. That’s 122 percent of average snowfall for this time of year. Statewide, the snowfall numbers are even higher, at 130 percent of average. “We had some really nice snowfall for the month of January,” said Jon Lea, a hydrologist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resource Conservation Service. “Last year was pretty skimpy. This is a whole lot different than it was last year.”
