8 Hour Everest Record Claim Holder Pemba Dorje Sherpa Jailed


EverestNews via NepalNews reports that Pemba Dorje Sherpa, 28, who claims to have climbed Everest in a record 8 hours 10 minutes was thrown in jail after he went to the police to compalin of being harrassed claimed the record in 2004.

List of National Forest Land to Be Sold

The Forest Service hopes to raise $800 million by selling 300,000 acres of national forest land in “isolated parcels” to secure funding for rural schools. That amounts to 469 square miles and is less than 1 percent of the National Forest Land. By contrast Rhode Island is 2,000 square miles and Manhattan is 31 square miles. Here’s a calculator.

Amazingly Missouri ranks fourth in acreage identified for sale behind California (85,000), Idaho (26,000) and Colorado (21,572). Since I’m originally from Missouri I’ll break down the numbers further. The 21,000 acres in Missouri amounts to approximately 34 square miles. The City of St. Louis consists of an area of 61 square miles.

French Writer And Anti-Ski Lift Activist Pierre Chapoutot Killed in Avalanche


The alpinist and writer Pierre Chapoutot has been killed by an avalanche on the crête de Lachat in the Lauzière range close to the ski resort of Valmorel. A climber of considerable repute he had opened a number of routes in the Oisans. Passionate about the mountain environment Mr. Chapoutot was known as a straight-talker and had most recently been campaigning against the further enchroachment of ski lifts in the Beafortain. More controversially he had defended the bombing of the la Grave cable car during construction in an article published in 1977.
