Canadian Seeking to Be Oldest Everest Climber Has Fatal Heart Attack at Camp One


The Herald reports Sean Egan, 63, of Ottawa had a heart attack while leading an Everest expedition in hopes of becoming the oldest Canadian to climb the mountain.

World's Highest Weather Station Erected at 6,500 Metres on Everest's Dongrongbu Glacier


China News reports a weather station has erected on Dongrongbu Glacier at 6,500 meters on Mount Everest (Qomolangma) and it will be monitored until October. The station will continue to collect data which will be retrieved when climbing season resumes in April. A weather station was erected on the same spot in 2001 but has since disappeared.

Russian Trekkers Injured by Car Bomb in Nepal

The climbing community was taken aback by early reports that two Russian Everest climbers had been injured by a Maoist car bomb in Nepal. Although the Russians were indeed injured they were identified later as just trekkers. They are being looked after by Asian Trekking Organization. The government has banned travel on major roads without an armed escort during the Maoist blockade.

Canada Plans World's Highest Hockey Game at Everest Base Camp

Beerleaguehockey.com reports a 17-member Canadian expedition Dr Sean Egan, a professor in the School of Human Kinetics at University of Ottawa, and Peter Luk, director, School of Business Management, Ryerson University, plan to set the record of the highest hockey by playing on the Khumbu Glacier near Everst base camp (5,400 meters). What else did you expect from a Canada expedition?

Chinese Climbers to Measure Everest Have No Mountaineering Experience

MountEverest.Net reports: Four climbers from SBSM have now been selected for the summit attempt: Huagang BAI (27), Xining LIU (28), Xiubo REN (26) and Tianlu BAI (26) (from left to right in picture). None of them had previous mountaineering experience, so CMA (China Mountaineering Association) have provided training for them since December 2004. The mission will be carried out with the assistance of Tibetan Mountaineering Association, in a joint expedition with the All-Women China-Japan Expedition.
