The Atlantic reports that Rupee, the “slumdog mountaineer”, that reports had said summited Everest actually only visited base camp where several dogs have gone before.

Paralyzed Dog Summits Mount Washington in Walking Wheelchair


Lucy, a 4-year-old dog, climbed Mount Washington in six hours on Aug. 18 despite being in a “walking wheelchair.”

Mount Mansfield Caretaker Hiking Adirondacks Great Range Loop On September 11

Benjamin Wetherby, caretaker for lodges in Vermont’s Green Mountain National Forest on Mount Mansfield, plans to hike the 25-mile Adirondack Great Range loop with his Australian cattle dog, Jadis, and friend, Michael DelSignore on Septmeber 11. The Great Range loop traverses eight of the Adirondacks’ 46 high peaks, including Mount Marcy, Haystack, Basin, Saddleback, Gothics, Armstrong, and Upper and Lower Wolfjaw. They are doing it to benefit National Breast Cancer Coalition and the Friederich’s Ataxia Research Alliance.

The Washington Post has this advice on dogs in the Smokies.

The national park does allow dogs in campgrounds, picnic areas and along roads, including scenic overlooks — but pooches must be on leashes no longer than six feet. Dogs are also permitted on the Gatlinburg Trail and the Oconaluftee River Trail. For people with pets, the park also recommends Mount Rogers and the Pisgah forest, among other national areas, and Kain suggests Shenandoah National Park, where dogs can trot along all but 20 miles of trails (out of a total 500 miles), and Grandfather Mountain in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Early Season Mines Peak, Colorado, Avalanche Fatal to Man and Dog
