The Tuckerman Ravine Trail, one of the most popular hiking trails in the White Mountains, is scheduled for a temporary closure this summer. On July 18, the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) will begin a significant reconstruction project in the steep Headwall section of the trail. Hikers will be able to use the lower portion of the trail, from Pinkham Notch Visitor Center to Hermit Lake Shelter. From Hermit Lake the trail will be closed until the junction of the Alpine Garden Trail. The trail will remain open from the Alpine Garden to the summit of Mt. Washington. If the United States government shuts down at midnight, Friday, April 8, because Congress has been unable to pass a budget, national parks will shut down according to previous precedents. Since nobody expected it to go this far, there has not been a lot of formal announcements on what would happen. But now as it gets closer you can be assured it will affect highpoints in National Forests and National Parks with National Parks being the most obvious since the whole park could be shutdown (e.g., Clingmans Dome, Rainier, Whitney, Denali). You should plan ahead. Unfortunately the closures may not be posted because the government will shut down.
We have heard specifically that the Great Smoky National Park will close the road going through it including access to Clingmans Dome which just opened for the season.
Clingmans Dome Road will close for the season on December 1.
Clingmans Dome Road is going to be closed (again) on Sept. 13-18 to conclude the final paving and striping on the large parking lot that serves visitors to the observation tower, and will re-grade the gravel shoulders.
