Wounded Warrior Among 3 Injured in Tuckerman Ravine Avalanche

Retired Marine Sgt. Keith Zeier was among 3 people injured January 17, 2013 in an 800 foot avalanche at Tuckerman Ravine on Mount Washington. Zeier was ice climbing in a fundraising effort at the time. Two other hikers were also injured.

Climber Presumed Dead Following Mount Rainier Avalanche on Ingraham Glacier Direct Route


A slab avalanche on Mount Rainier on June 5 hit 11 climbers on the Ingraham Direct Route. 10 of the climbers were rescued. The 11th climber was not registered to climb. A US Army Reserve Helicopter from Fort Lewis removed 2 climbers and six rescuers. The avalanche 100 – 200 yards wide and 1-2 meters deep started at 12,500 feet in elevation and traveled to about 11,200 feet in elevation. Guides from International Mountain Guides and Rainier Mountaineering, Incorporated helped rescue the 10. The missing climber was identified as Mark Wedeven,

Japanese Report: Middle Aged More Likely for Backcountry Accidents

French Writer And Anti-Ski Lift Activist Pierre Chapoutot Killed in Avalanche


The alpinist and writer Pierre Chapoutot has been killed by an avalanche on the crête de Lachat in the Lauzière range close to the ski resort of Valmorel. A climber of considerable repute he had opened a number of routes in the Oisans. Passionate about the mountain environment Mr. Chapoutot was known as a straight-talker and had most recently been campaigning against the further enchroachment of ski lifts in the Beafortain. More controversially he had defended the bombing of the la Grave cable car during construction in an article published in 1977.

7 Fatalities on Slovakia'a Highest Mountain Range


Avalanches killed seven Czech tourists Saturday in Slovakia’s highest mountain range and a German man on a snowshoe tour a day earlier in Switzerland, officials said.
