The Seattle Times has great article on Chad Kellogg’s unsuccessful attempt to set a record on climbing Everest from Nepal without oxygen. Kellogg had wanted to sprinkle his ashes on the summit. Kellogg climbed from base camp to the Balcony (an ascent of nearly 3,000 meters) in about 19 hours before turning back. In 2004 Kellogg climbed from Paradise to the top of Rainier and back down in 4 hours, 59 minutes

Authoirites say they believe Anthony Vietti and his climbing companion, Katie Nolan are the two bodies found on Mount Hood at the 9,700-level of Reid Headwall. The two disappeared in December 2009. The body of a third companion Luke Gullberg was found last year.

The Montreal Gazette has a really nice article detailing life at the Adirondack Loj noting the homespun dinner costs $18.50. Everything, including the bread and the strawberry shortcake, is homemade and that it serves serves micro-brews from Cooperstown Brewing Co. in New York state and Swedish Hill wines from New York’s Finger Lakes district.

Authorities report that a brush fire that has caused rerouting of traffic on Saddle Road on Mauna is 60 percent contained. Traffic is being detoured through an old section of Saddle Road and Mauna Kea State Recreation Area remains closed until further notice. The fire has included dramatic video footage of tornadic like fire. Authorities said they have arrested a man for arson in the fire.

Other articles have suggested the fire might be radioactive because of uranium coated shells at the army site.

New Hampshire, Maine, Virginia and Georgia are considering corporate sponsorships of state parks. This could include corporate names on uniforms. Some state parks in Virginia already have corporate sponsored trail direction kiosks.

The Benham city council is now backing the proposed coal mine within 100 feet of its water supply because it does not want to lose the coal industry. Below is the note in May 2010 in which the National Trust for Historic Preservation put the town on its endangered list because of the mine.
