Lee Adams III was killed on July 27 when he fell into a crevasse on Emmons Glaicer at the 13,000 level on Mount Rainier. Adams was leading a group of three when all fell into the crevasse after summiting. The others were injured but able to climb out.

George Le Masurier has one of the most amusing tales you’ll ever find about summiting Rainier. Here’s just one excerpt.

Because so many people try to climb Mount Rainier every year, the National Park Service rangers make it harder by removing all the oxygen from the air, which they then heat up and sell to certain politicians during election campaigns. I kept scraping my way toward the 14,411-foot top in hopes there would be an underwear-changing service up there. No luck.
Reaching the summit is a moment of sheer joy and triumph. It lasts about 3 seconds until you realize you have to go back down the same way you came up.

The Glacier Basin Trail at the base of Mount Rainier which was wiped out by about 18 inches of rain that poured down in 36 hours and raged through the White River Valley in November 2006 has reopened (and been rerouted).

12-year-old Matt Moniz has completed on Mauna Kea hiking 50 summits in 43 days, 3 hours, 51 minutes and 9 seconds.

He set out to do 50 summits in 50 days or less. He is doing this before entering the seventh grade in his home of Boulder, Colorado this fall. He only has Mauna Kea left.

The 3rd annual Race to the Top of Vermont will be August 29, 2010 with a 9:00 start. Run, mountain bike, or non-competitively hike up the highest mountain in Vermont on the famous Mt Mansfield Toll Road. This event will be limited to the first 900 registered racers.

Proceeds from this event will benefit three 501©3 non-profit organizations. The Catamount Trail Association maintains, manages and protects the 300-mile backcountry ski trail the length of Vermont.
