GPS Satellite 2F-1, the first of the new generation, of GPS satellites launched May 28 after several delays after the program was announced in 1996. The 2F is designed to replace to Block 2A satellites which were launched 1990 and 1997 and were supposed to have a 7.5 year life span. 11 of those satellites are still used in the GPS constellation (4 of which were launched in 1992 or before). It is part of an $8 billion upgrade of the system which will take more than 10 years.

This item from the plot line of “One Live to Lead” got caught in our RSS feed for “Wheeler Peak” from google news.

An angry Markko seeks refuge at Buenos Dias remembering the way in which Ford rubbed his sexual conquest in Markko’s face. Ford is bludgeoned and left for dead. Penny gets Rex and Gigi released from jail. They look inside the mysterious box and find an old photograph that leads them to wonder if the answers about Rex’s parents can be found near a mountain in the Sangre De Cristo range, Wheeler Peak.

I can’t exactly say we’ll be watching or even staying tune. But…

Native Americans are seeking to rename Mount Rainier to Ti’ swaq’. There have been unsuccessful efforts over the years to name the mountain for Americanized variations of the name — Tahoma, Tacoma, etc. and the Native Americans say it should it should have its proper Native name. That name was believed to be the name “snowy mountain.” The “Ti’ swaq’” name is for the group Native Americans who lived on the mountain.

The official and most popular route for Kings Peak is from Henry Fork to Dollar Lake up Kings Peak takes you up Gunsight Pass down into the Painters Basin and then back up to Anderson Pass on to the summit. This is longer and involves signicant elevation loss. However a lot of people take the “landslide shortcut” which is no a fairly worn trail which cuts across about halfway down from Gunsight. Hardcore folks try to cut directly across from Gunsight to Anderson but that route is fairly treacherous. The Deseret News has this analysis of the shortcut. Even more hardcore is avoiding Gunsight together via the “Toilet Bowl” to Anderson Pass Here’s a map. Here’s the discussion over the years on the forum.

The SitNews reports on a new study by Jeff Benowitz. of the formation of the Alaska Range which geologists call “weird.” Among the items:
*Denali sticks out with now big peaks close by (the closest is Nenana Mountain)
*They suspect the range is 18 million rather 6 million years old even though it looks “young”

There have been 4 recent helicopter rescues on Denali:
*Solo climber Luc Benoit fell 1,000 feet while climbing the West Rib
*Guide climber suffering high altitude pulmonary edema at the 17,200-foot camp
*A climber suffering from altitude illness at 14,200
*A climber with a kidney stone was airlifted from 7,800 feet

Mount McKinley is reporting a 39 percent summit success rate this season.

Hawaii has closed portions of the Mauna Kea Forest Reserve and the Kaohe Game Management Area through August 31 because of drought. This is in wake of the National Weather Service announcement that the October 2009 to April 2010 Hawaiian Islands wet season was the driest in the past 30 years.
