The AgriNews passes along this note about a campground at Hawkeye Point.

Kaitlin Michelson, a Sibley-Ocheyedan FFA member, said her chapter has developed Hawkeye Point, the state’s highest natural elevation, as a tourist destination for a community service project. The FFA chapter encouraged the county to purchase the farm, and they helped convert the house to the county Extension office. Now they are building a campground.

Mark Beaumont bicycled around the the world in a record 194 days and 17 hours in 2008. In 2009, he biked the American Cordillera – the longest mountain range on the planet. Included on the adventure were climbs of McKinley and Aconcagua.

Al Batt at The Bluff County Reader in Minnesota has this amusing observation about Hawkeye Point:

I told my wife that I had driven down to Hawkeye Point, north of Sibley in Osceola County, the highest point in Iowa. It is 1,670 feet above sea level. My wife asked, “Don’t you mean that you drove up to Hawkeye Point?”

Rangers rescued a man and woman from Quebec on Monday, April 26 after they fell 50 meteres after they had raveled over the Muir Snowfield and between Muir Rock Anvil Rock on Mount Rainier. After being pulled from the crevasse they hiked to Camp Muir where they were airlifted off the mountain.

Oh Eun-sun is the first woman to complete all 14 8,000 meter peaks in the world. 19 other climbers have scaled the 26,247 feet. She completed on Nepal’s Annapurna, the 10th-highest peak in the world. While the climb was a victory for Korea, another Korean team led by Hong-bin, a Korean climber who lost all 10 of his fingers during a 1991 climb up Mount McKinley had problems on the mountain with at least one of the climbers dying.
