The feds have vetoed plan to rename Mount Clay to Mount Reagan in the Presidentials. New Hampshire had supported the changed in 2003. The article notes that in 1913, Mount Clinton, named for DeWitt Clinton, governor was renamed Mount Pierce for President Franklin Pierce (a New Hampshire native). Hikers still refer to it as Mount Clinton with a trail to it being the Mount Clinton Trail.

The vote by the United States Board on Geographic Names was 11-0 with one abstention which was quoted:
“The proposal to change the name of Mount Clay to Mount Reagan was disapproved at a vote of 11 against and one abstention.” The Board had received nearly 160 emails opposing the change.
